What is America 250?
In 2026, the United States will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a moment that marked the birth of a nation founded on the ideals of liberty, self governance, and civic responsibility. Known as America 250, this milestone invites communities across the country to reflect on the people, places, and events that have shaped the American story over two and a half centuries.
For Hillsboro, America 250 is deeply personal. Founded in 1823, our community was built by settlers who believed in opportunity, hard work, and the promise of building something lasting. Generations of residents have contributed to Hillsboro’s story—through agriculture, education, industry, military service, and community leadership—each leaving a mark on the town we know today. By celebrating America 250, Hillsboro honors not only the nation’s founding, but the local history that continues to shape our identity.
America 250 is both a commemoration and a conversation. It is an opportunity to look back on where we have been, recognize the resilience and contributions of those who came before us, and reflect on how today’s actions will shape the future. Through history, art, storytelling, and community engagement, Hillsboro’s year long America 250 celebration connects our roots to our future—reminding us that our local story is an important chapter in the larger American narrative.
